What is Secondary Flame-Resistant (FR)?

N/A There are two categories of flame-resistant (FR) garments sold for industrial applications: primary FR garments and secondary FR garments (SFR). Each category is designed to perform different tasks. Secondary flame-resistant garments (like Tyvek® 400 SFR and Tychem® 2000 SFR) should not be worn without primary flame-resistant garments underneath. The common industry definitions, according to industry standards, are as follows:
  • Primary flame-resistant protective clothing: Protective clothing that is engineered for the primary purpose to provide protection to the wearer from flame and thermal hazards.
  • Secondary flame-resistant protective clothing: Protective clothing that is designed to be worn over primary flame-resistant protective clothing without negatively impacting the burn injury protection levels of the primary flame-resistant protective clothing. Secondary FR garments should respond to a fire in a way that doesn’t negatively impact the performance of the primary FR garment when worn as an ensemble. Secondary FR garments should not continue to burn, melt, or drip once the fire exposure ends.
SFR Fabrics
When selecting a secondary flame-resistant (SFR) protective garment, it is important to examine both the flame-resistant (FR) requirements and perform a hazard assessment for hazardous and nonhazardous particles, liquids, or chemicals. Please visit DuPont™ SafeSPEC™ to learn more about Tyvek® 400 SFR and Tychem® 2000 SFR garments and the specified hazards they help protect against.

A new generation of single-use secondary flame-resistant garment technology

Tyvek® 400 SFR
Provides an inherent barrier against hazardous and non-hazardous particles (down to 1.0 micron in size,) oils and greases. Provides secondary flame resistance when worn over primary FR garments like those made with DuPont™ Nomex®

Note

N/A Tyvek® 400 SFR garments provide only secondary flame-resistant protection. They must always be worn over appropriate primary flame-resistant protective clothing in an environment that needs flame protection, along with other personal protective equipment that protects your face, hands, and feet. For Tyvek® 400 SFR hooded garments, a primary flame-resistant hood/balaclava should be worn. This information is based upon technical data that DuPont™ believes to be reliable.
